Episodes
I like Episodes because it shows what uncreative assholes in Hollywood are like compared to smart, funny British writers (The Original British Office vs. NBC USA version. C'mon, really do I have to say anything else?). My only issue, at this point, is that Beverly (Tamsin Greig), or Betsy as Matt LeBlanc teasingly calls her, is about 45% too bitchy. The only reason I have a problem with that, is because she reminds me of myself.
An example of one of those key moments that really highlights the difference between American commercial television and British Non-Profit BBC tv, was a conversation between Matt LeBlanc and the other key player, Sean (Stephen Mangan). Matt wants to re-write a female character in the show from gay to straight to help prolong the potential, years long, relationship tension between her and his character. Sean being a British born producer says no way. Matt asks how many total shows did they have in their 4 year British series? 12? 18? Sean nods, yes. Matt explains that one full season of American tv is roughly 24 episodes, so they need to be able to really stretch things out over a few years. Unlike the BBC where writers can pack a punch into a very short season.
That just says it all.
